We would like to take a moment to introduce to you Ferndale Fire Protection District’s Knox Box Program. As Ferndale Fire will no longer be accepting or maintaining physical keys given to us by residents or businesses,  we have decided to initiate a district-wide Knox Box program to promote and serve the health, safety, and general welfare of all citizens residing permanently or temporarily within the Ferndale Fire Protection District.

What is a Knox Box?

Small KnoxBoxA Knox Box is a small (approximately 4” x 2.5” x 2”), locking steel box designed to hold one or more door keys (or key codes) that control access to a building. The box is installed on the exterior of the building near the main point of entry that the key is used to control. There are 2 main Knox Box configurations: a permanently-mounted model; and a door-hanger model for temporary usage. Larger permanently-mounted models are available for buildings with multiple access keys. Your home or business keys are locked inside the box, and our master key opens the box.

What is the Knox Box used for?

The Knox Box provides the fire department with access to your building when you are unable to provide access yourself, preventing costly and time-consuming efforts by the Department to try to find a neighbor with a key or to “break in” during a medical or fire-related emergency. Knox Boxes are recommended for persons experiencing temporary or ongoing medical situations which may require the provision of emergency medical care (i.e., recent hospitalization), and for aging individuals, especially those who live alone. Knox Boxes will be required for some commercial and residential structures, all short-term rental properties, and all properties with security-gated access.

Who has access to my Knox Box?

Only members of the Ferndale Volunteer Fire Department can unlock your Knox Box and access your key. Each FVFD engine is equipped with a fully secure, individualized means of accessing the Knox key. Every access to the Knox key is electronically monitored and recorded to ensure your safety and our accountability.

Who will maintain my Knox Box?

Because FVFD controls the keys to open your Knox Box, FVFD will perform no-charge annual maintenance on your Knox Box. This maintenance is limited to ensuring that the box unlocks and locks smoothly and that the box contains a functional key (or keys) to your residence or business.

How much does it cost?

The residential (1-key) boxes cost between $210 and $231, depending on the configuration. Installation of any box may be completed by the homeowner, or FVFD can assist in the installation of the box at the owner’s request. A limited number of temporary door-hanger style residential Knox Boxes are available through FVFD on an as-needed, short-term rental basis.

How do I get one?

Knox Boxes can be ordered only through the Knox manufacturer’s website at https://www.knoxbox.com, and they will be delivered directly to you.
